The first main objective of this repository of business skills was to share with all Marketing teams a common vision of the main missions and expected skills , in a context where the level of requirement vis-à-vis this profession is more more importantly. For this, we had to professionalize our approach to business skills in order to develop a common language, and therefore shared challenges and requirements, around business families.
We had to develop an operational tool for managers, an essential condition for the success of the process. What is a repository of business skills? The repository that we have developed is a tool which specifies the behavioral and functional skills of each family of professions, by breaking them down according to a level of expertise. It must bear a requirement and not become an averaging tool. Used during annual interviews or to implement skills development courses, it is a way of bringing employees to this consensual level of requirement. How did you build your repository of business skills? We have set up an approach of international working groups in order to build this repository of business skills. The process took place over a year. We, the HR team, led discussions with internal experts, particularly in marketing.

Our mission is to deploy this method on the 21 business families that we have identified at Essilor. We are proceeding gradually, starting with “transversal” professions followed by those presenting more specificities. The skills that have thus emerged have been detailed by level: strategic, business and transactional. How do you use your repository of business skills? What are the benefits? The first feedback from managers indicates that this tool has structured and facilitated the management of the business skills of their teams because it provides specific elements within a given framework. Thanks to the field approach from which it originates, the professional skills repository does not remain in large contexts but goes into detail. This is what makes it particularly operational.
Starting from an operational need, it now shines through all HR requirements and practices. What are the keys to success in developing and deploying a repository of business skills? The repository of business skills must carry an operational and consensual vision The main thing is to make sense. We must therefore be able to take height in order to understand the operational impact of this reference system. Confronting reality by showing adaptability and flexibility is the key to guaranteeing an operational tool. Indeed, otherwise, there is a great risk, by setting up a repository of skills and professional communities, of becoming rigid without leading to an effective and operational implementation.
